Most "remote sales" entry roles are SDR (Sales Development Representative) positions: you make outbound contact with potential customers, qualify their interest, and pass warm leads to senior sales reps. The work is repetitive and quota-driven, but companies invest heavily in training new SDRs and the role is a well-known pathway into account executive positions within 12–18 months. Pay typically combines a base salary (USD $40–55k) with on-target commission.
Most companies hiring for sales roles run a three-stage process: a written application (cover note + résumé), a 30-minute introductory call with a recruiter or hiring manager, and a small paid or unpaid trial task that mirrors the actual work. The trial task is the part most beginners under-prepare for — it's a far better predictor of who gets hired than the interview itself. Treat it like the most important deliverable of your week.
Lead with a short, honest cover note (under 200 words) that does three things: shows you've actually read the job description, demonstrates the relevant skill in some small way (a sample, a side project, a relevant past experience that isn't on your résumé), and acknowledges what you'd need to learn. Hiring managers are rarely fooled by inflated résumés but they consistently reward self-awareness and clear writing.
